Dear Dotty,

Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to get to know someone you never knew was a part of your life and heritage? To be honest, I never did until I found out about you.

A few years ago, I was tidying up the living room when I came across a letter from you addressed to my mama. Maybe I shouldn’t have, but I read it anyway. You were asking after us all and you told her about how the family was doing, you even sent pictures and, to my great delight, your new address.

At first, I was unsure whether or not to make contact with you. After all, you hadn’t written to me and my mama hadn’t mentioned this. I mean, she’d mentioned you before. I knew your name and all and that’s why I read the letter, but she hadn’t mentioned that you had been in contact. It took me a few weeks to finally decide to write to you, only to discover hat there was an error in the postal box address you had given.
I was totally shattered, reaching out to someone who wasn’t there almost broke my heart. I figured I’d just let it be… But I couldn’t you see, I had too many questions, too many things I wanted to know. So I decided to keep trying and trying in a hope that one day, you’ll find me through my letters.
Lots of love,

Your grand daughter.
